I just came across this site and found it both very interesting and inspiring... Don't believe the hype is a blog by a woman named Audrey, addressing current issues on girl culture, body image, celebrity hype and more.
I totally agree it's rediculous that the current day models, moviestars, artists etc (who've always been fashion rolemodels), are sooooo abnormally thin!
Of course, insecure young girls take this as an example, since this is the ideal they're confronted with. And what does a young girl want to be? The perfect girl, so nobody will bully her and she becomes very popular in school and out...
But now, being on a diet is just not healty for young kids. What parents can do is just raise them in eating healthy food! That will make a lot of children and youngsters healthier in life.
But now, they shouldn't be wanting to be as thin as the current day rolemodels. That's simply not healty and could have them create an obsessional fear for becoming obese.
Did some quick Google-ing, as I hear anorexia is becoming a bigger and bigger problem in Western countries. Just read that 5% of Britain young girls is estimated of having anorexia nervosa... That scares the hell out of me - happy to not be one of them, and even more happy to hear about initiatives like Don't believe the hype. You go Audrey!
Since I'm talking about not such a positive subject... Why I found this topic inspirational? - I think it's great that some people spend a lot of energy on addressing a topic that doesn't always get a lot of attention in society. Even cooler I find when an initiative like this makes it to reach the broader public :-)
